{"id":8979,"date":"2018-08-31T17:28:00","date_gmt":"2018-08-31T14:28:00","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2019-06-20T12:01:40","modified_gmt":"2019-06-20T09:01:40","slug":"leaving-and-coming-home","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jerusaleminstitute.org.il\/en\/blog\/leaving-and-coming-home\/","title":{"rendered":"Leaving and Coming Home"},"content":{"rendered":"<div dir=\"LTR\" style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">According to the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS), in 2016 (the most recent year for which there is detailed data), the population of Jerusalem grew by two percent, the same percentage by which the entire population of Israel increased during the same year .<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div dir=\"LTR\" align=\"left\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div dir=\"LTR\" style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">The change in the scope of the population in the city is primarily the result of natural increase (the difference between the number of live births and the number of deaths in a given year), immigrants, and movement between settlements. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Other factors include the reunification of families, immigration, and returning residents.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div dir=\"LTR\" align=\"left\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div dir=\"LTR\" style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">According to the CBS, a resident of Israel who sees more than a year abroad is considered a resident who has left (a <\/span><\/span><i><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">yored<\/span><\/span><\/i><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> ), and upon returning to Israel, a resident who has spent more than a year abroad is considered to be a returning resident or an &#8220;incoming <\/span><\/span><i><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">yored<\/span><\/span><\/i><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> &#8221; (as distinguished from a &#8220;new immigrant,&#8221; who is defined as someone who was not a resident of Israel, immigrated, and received citizenship). <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">In 2016, there were 15,200 Israelis classified as &#8220;departing residents,&#8221; while 8,900 returned after a year or more abroad. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">For Jerusalem, the data was 1,640 departures, and 790 incoming. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">In Tel Aviv the figures for outgoing and incoming residents were 1,600 and 640, respectively.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div dir=\"LTR\" style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div dir=\"LTR\" style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Those leaving and entering Israel are distinguished by the different ages in each group. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Among those leaving, most families with children up to the age of ten. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Moving with children occurs within the country as well, but usually the ages of the children are zero to four, and the percentage of children ages five to nine, is relatively low. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">The decision to move to a different country is more complicated than the decision to move to a new area, and it may be that it is not carried out for a few years.<\/span><\/span><span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div dir=\"LTR\" align=\"left\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div dir=\"LTR\" style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">The ages of adults who leave the country are more diverse than those who move between settlements. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Despite the dominance of 20-<\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blogger.com\/null\" name=\"_GoBack\"><\/a><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> to 29-year-olds among those moving from place to place within the country, among those leaving are many in the 30 to 44-year-old age group.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div dir=\"LTR\" align=\"left\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div dir=\"LTR\" style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Among the &#8220;returning <\/span><\/span><i><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">yordim<\/span><\/span><\/i><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> ,&#8221; there are similar numbers among all the age groups, up to age 45.
