{"id":9145,"date":"2011-05-01T11:16:00","date_gmt":"2011-05-01T08:16:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jerusaleminstitute.org.il\/justly-or-wrongly-convicted\/"},"modified":"2011-05-01T11:16:00","modified_gmt":"2011-05-01T08:16:00","slug":"justly-or-wrongly-convicted","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jerusaleminstitute.org.il\/en\/blog\/justly-or-wrongly-convicted\/","title":{"rendered":"Justly or Wrongly Convicted?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/p>\n<div align=\"center\" style=\"background: white; margin-bottom: 12.0pt; text-align: center;\"><b>Inbal Doron<o:p><\/o:p><\/b><\/div>\n<div style=\"background: white; margin-bottom: 12.0pt;\"><\/div>\n<div align=\"center\" dir=\"RTL\" style=\"background: white; direction: rtl; text-align: center; unicode-bidi: embed;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"background: white; line-height: 150%; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #222222; mso-bidi-language: HE;\">Crime rates in <st1:place w:st=\"on\"><st1:country-region w:st=\"on\">Israel<\/st1:country-region><\/st1:place> have been falling over the past five years; these were the findings of the last annual report of the Israel Police Force.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">&nbsp; <\/span>What about crime rates in <st1:place w:st=\"on\"><st1:city w:st=\"on\">Jerusalem<\/st1:city><\/st1:place>? <o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"background: white; line-height: 150%; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #222222; mso-bidi-language: HE;\">In 2009, 11,550 residents of <st1:city w:st=\"on\">Jerusalem<\/st1:city> were convicted of felonies \u2013<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">&nbsp; <\/span>the equivalent of 1.5% of <st1:place w:st=\"on\"><st1:city w:st=\"on\">Jerusalem<\/st1:city><\/st1:place>\u2019s population.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">&nbsp; <\/span>Of the convicted, 1,400 were minors under the age of 17 (12%), and another 19% were young adults, between the ages of 17 and 21. <o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"background: white; line-height: 150%; text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"background: white; line-height: 150%; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #222222; mso-bidi-language: HE;\">The distribution of felonies showed that 36% were social order offenses, 21% were offenses physical crimes, 19% were property crimes and another 13% were drug related.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">&nbsp; <\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"background: white; line-height: 150%; text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"background: white; line-height: 150%; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #222222; mso-bidi-language: HE;\">The percentage of males among the criminally convicted is considerably high at 88%.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">&nbsp; <\/span>Crime types which are almost exclusively dominated by males (defined as 95% or more of convicted felons being male) include murder and manslaughter, sexual assault, drug-related crimes and licensing offenses. Of felonies committed by females, an internal distribution study showed that the crimes were mostly concentrated in the areas of offenses against person and against public order: 37% and 32% respectively. <o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"background: white; line-height: 150%; text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"background: white; line-height: 150%; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #222222; mso-bidi-language: HE;\">A longitudinal study of the data does not demonstrate any significant trend or change in the number of crimes committed, with the exception of the number of drug offenses committed in the past decade.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">&nbsp; <\/span>In 1999, 315 cases of drug trafficking were opened, and another 710 cases of drug use.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">&nbsp; <\/span>By 2009, the numbers had jumped to 610 cases of drug trafficking (nearly 100% increase) and another 1,120 cases involving drug use (60% increase).<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">&nbsp; <\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"background: white; line-height: 150%; text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"background: white;\"><span style=\"color: #222222; mso-bidi-language: HE;\"><span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"background: white;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-gfx9ZM30DrA\/Tb0WzBX9u7I\/AAAAAAAADYI\/Xdej1qlbMsw\/s1600\/2011_04_criminals_w.jpg\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" border=\"0\" height=\"178\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-gfx9ZM30DrA\/Tb0WzBX9u7I\/AAAAAAAADYI\/Xdej1qlbMsw\/s320\/2011_04_criminals_w.jpg\" width=\"320\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Inbal Doron Crime rates in Israel have been falling over the past five years; these were the findings of the last annual report of the Israel Police Force.&nbsp; What about crime rates in Jerusalem?
