The Security Fence Around Jerusalem: Implications for the City and its Residents
Pub No. 111
The establishment of the separation fence was the most significant Israeli measure taken in the city since 1967. This decision is shaping a new reality with far-reaching political, social, economic, and psychological-consciousness consequences.
The researchers of the Jerusalem Institute for Policy Research have been studying the future implications of the separation fence on Jerusalem and its metropolis since the decision to construct it in 2003. They correctly identified the effects as they are apparent today, after its construction, which include isolating and disconnecting the East Jerusalem residents from their natural hinterland in the West Bank, and strengthening their affiliation with West Jerusalem and Israel.
The research team met with Israeli and Palestinian experts and planners, with officials from the Israeli security establishment and the police, representatives of the Jerusalem municipality, Palestinian businessmen, and political figures from both sides. The findings, conclusions, and recommendations were gathered in two documents that were published in Hebrew and English.
